personal thoughts 2

minna~

tonight will be a bombardment of posts from me!

i was not able to continue my blog last week due to business at work. anyways, it has been a week since the tragic hostage taking here in the Philippines but there are still discussions about it roaming. there have also been "finger-pointing" and blaming on whose fault was it for the tragic end.

there are those who blame the media for the live broadcast of the hostage taking event. because it was live, the hostage-taker could watch every move of the police from the television inside the tourist bus. the police said that they had difficulty resolving the situation because the media was "revealing" their tactics due to the live coverage. media was also blamed for showing the footage of Mendoza's brother being "arrested" which "triggered" the violence from Mendoza. as defense, the media said that they were merely doing their job and it was the job of the police to announce "media blackout" since there was no announcement from the police, the media did not "limit" their coverage.

media, there are limitations to such incidents. the media should be aware of this limitations. there is a proper protocol which they themselves should follow.

there are also those who blame the police because they did not have the proper gear, they did not have the right tactics and they did not have proper training (especially the negotiator). the police did not have enough knowledge on how to solve the incident. with this, the local government was also blamed for letting such incident last for almost 11 hours. they were also blamed for the lack or training given to the police task force.

police, you were too aggressive and lacked the training or negotiation. government, it's about time you focus on those who are supposed to the trained to protect the people and not the funds you are stealing from those of the public? what do you think?

there those who blame the brother of Mendoza. based from a source, the police had no intention of arresting or hand-cuffing him. he was merely being assisted so he can talk to the brother. but it was said that when the brother saw the media people, he started to run towards the media and start scandalizing because according to him, he was being arrested. this was shen the police started to force him into the police car and handcuff him. i guess it looked as though the brother also wanted the attention. or maybe he was really being arrested? who knows? according to the police, he was an accomplice but maybe, if there was proper communication and negotiation, the brother could have been a good "bridge" to Mendoza and the hostage taking would not have ended in a tragic way. but who knows right?

lastly, based from another source, when the survivers were interviewed, they did not blame Mendoza. the ones they were blaming were actually the police and the government. they said that Mendoza was even explaining to them what happened to him and what he wanted. they started to feel afraid when bullets started to shoot from outside the bus (from the police) and they saw that Mendoza was becoming aggitated. add to that, Mendoza was panicking when one of the foreigners would not keep quiet so he slit the throat. at some point, they blame the lack of trainig and knowledge of the police task force.

of course, the mere action of taking hostage and worse, foreigners being the hostage is wrong. i am not defending Mendoza for his cruel actions, what i am trying to say is that he did not resort to such actions out of whim. there was a cause for such actions.

in the end, all we should be doing is praying, for those who died, for the survivers, for peace and for everyone directly or indirectly involved in the incident. +
